About Thermal Paper
Thermal paper is that indicate letter, Top Coating Shape and form by reaction with heat
Thermal paper is produced by Coating on Base paper. Facsimile paper is typical of it.
(When you heat Thermal paper furtively by a cigarette lighter, you can see the paper’s color change to Black, Blue and Red, is depend on dye)
Thermal paper has a strong point that maintenance costs is cheap by using parts that produce heat is called THP(Thermal Head Printer) without Toner or Ink, so that new uses are developed continuously.
If assort Thermal paper besides Facsimile paper, Medical treatment paper (is used to Photographic Paper of MRI, CT and Supersonic wave), Synthetic Thermal paper, a pari-mutuel Ticket, Subway Ticket, POS, and Label.
Generally, Thermal paper becomes classify by Normal Thermal paper and Top Coating Thermal Paper greatly.
Normal Thermal paper’s kind is Facsimile paper and Thermal paper has generally a double coating layer.
Top Coating Thermal paper’s kind is POS and Photographic Paper is used in Medical treatment. These Top Coating Thermal papers is consisted by plastics that base is not paper.
Thermal paper Coating is able to sort by Under Coating, Top Coating, Over Coating, Normal is coated by Under and Top, Top Coating is coated by Under, Top and Over.
Each Layer functions are,
- Over Coating Layer is for Protecting Thermal Layer,
It means, above protecting is for keep away change of color happened by slight latent heat.
And, improving durability.
- Top Coating Layer(=Thermal Layer) is for Color shows by heat,
Thermal sensitizer is treated in this layer.
- Under Coating Layer is for improving smoothness and insulation (heat shield).
- In addition, sometimes, by prosperity of paper, there is case that Back Coating is required
It is for control Curl is appeared by Coating.
Kinetic sensitivity of Thermal Paper
Generally Thermal paper’s heat sensitivity is started from 70?, and the highest sensitivity is above 110?(Over OD1.20).
Thermal paper can sort by temperature and time of sensitivity, Low Sensitivity, Standard Sensitivity, High Sensitivity and Ultra high Sensitivity. Normal Thermal Paper is Standard Sensitivity.
Chemicals for Thermal paper can be sorted as follows,
- 1. Main ingredient of Thermal Coating
- Under Coating
i. Pigment
ii. Dye
iii. Developer
iv. Sensitizer
v. Sub Sensitizer
vi. Lubricant
vii. Binder (PVA, Latex)

ix. etc
- Over Coating
i. PVA (Protection Layer)
ii. PVA Crosslinker (Function(-OH) in PVA can be changed Hydrophilic to
Hydrophobic)
iii. Anti Blocking and Prevent Pressure coloring Agent
iv. etc
* PVA for grinding of dye or developer is fully hydrolysis type and Degree of Polymerization(DP) is 1,700. DP of PVA for over coating is higher than 1,700.
